Everything You Need to Know about Extraction 2 on Netflix

Extraction 2

Listen to the Podcast:

If you haven’t seen Extraction, Netflix’s biggest hit of the moment, it’s best to stop reading to avoid spoilers.

In just a few days, Extraction (or Misión Rescate in Spanish), by Chris Hemsworth and the Russo Brothers, became the most-watched film in Netflix history and unexpectedly broke records. The story inspired by Tyler Rake’s comics was so successful that Netflix did not hesitate to confirm it for a second part.

The first part is left on a stressful cliffhanger, where they left us with a 50% chance that that bullet killed Tyler Rake or got stuck in a strategic place that would allow it to survive. According to Netflix data, Rake achieved his mission to rescue the kidnapped son of a criminal leader (and kill 183 people) and managed to redeem himself and change his own story, but that does not mean that everything is already said in history.

The Russos were more than willing to continue the story, and Joe Russo even said that Tyler was “just meant to imply hope. Whether it’s real or a figment of the kid’s imagination, it’s an artistic and poetic way of implying that Ovi had a guardian” who watched him and managed to save his life. And in the future, he has a chance at a normal life.”

The Russos said that an Extraction sequel wouldn’t necessarily be in development in the future, but they were quick to confirm that they were indeed working on one and that Chris Hemsworth was back for a second project.

Extraction 2 is already on the way, and there’s even a trailer revealing more details.

Extraction 2 Trailer

The first Extraction trailer for the sequel shows Tyler Rake on a new mission and confirms that all this happens nine months after the events of the first. Tyler was clinically dead, but they managed to save him, and now he must go on a dangerous new mission.

What is Extraction 2 about?

The synopsis reads: After miraculously surviving the events of the first Extraction, the Australian black-ops mercenary is on another dangerous mission: to break the family of a ruthless Georgian mobster out of prison. Hemsworth meets with director Sam Hargrave and AGBO studio producers Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, who are also writing the script. Golshifteh Farahani also returns to his role from the first Extraction Movie, with Daniel Bernhardt and Tinatin Dalakishvili co-starring.

After revealing that filming had already begun, Chris Hemsworth also shared two images from the new movie. He doesn’t say too much so as not to spoil anything, but they do confirm that Tyler Rake is on a new mission, one that takes him to a very different place than in the first Extraction.

Everything indicates that this is a past mission, where he seems to be entering some bunker or war tank, so we can think that it is a military operation before Rake became a mercenary.

The Differences, According to Chris Hemsworth

The actor shared a photo where he confirmed that the sequel is already being filmed. In addition to a look at the film’s new location in Prague, Hemsworth wrote that “the first day of shooting on Extraction 2. Two things are different from the last film. One: very, very cold. Two: I’m alive. How? You’ll have to find out. Watch the movie. Stay tuned.”

It doesn’t say much, but it seems to confirm the theory that this is a prequel and not a continuation of the story we already saw.

How will Chris Hemsworth Return?

Believe it or not, Hemsworth didn’t want to take the role originally; he didn’t want to do action heroes, but the story and emotional journey of the character won him over, and the rest is history. Now, we know that the character has much to give and is indestructible.

The final scene of the Extraction 2 seemed to indicate that Tyler was injured and in danger of dying, and the trailer for the sequel confirms that he really did die, but they managed to save him and he fought his way through, which leads us to a new mission where he must enter a prison to save a family trapped in a moment of chaos and violence.

Sam Hargrave, the film’s director, said, “if you watch the Extraction 2 and feel that Tyler’s redemption is complete with sacrifice, then you understand the film in one way, with the boy honoring him through a vision. But if you loved the character and the possibility of him surviving made you happy, then you’ll see Tyler Rake in that image”, this leaves open the possibility of having Tyler or going another way.

Actors

In addition to Chris Hemsworth, who returns with Rake, the Extraction 2 sequel also stars Golshifteh Farahani, Tornike Gogrichiani, Adam Bessa, Daniel Bernhardt, Tinatin Dalakishvili, and Olga Kurylenko.

The Premiere Date

The Extraction 2 will arrive on Netflix on June 16 of this year.
