Apple’s iOS 16 was a big step forward for the iPhone’s operating system. iOS 17 was expected to follow suit, for obvious reasons, with a lot of updates. However, reports say it won’t, which could be disappointing for those who were hoping for a big change. As was already said, Apple is thinking about ways to improve and update its operating system, but they are also very busy working on another important idea for the company.
Without changing much
The news comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has a lot of inside information about Apple. As the expert said, the company has been working on a Virtual Reality headset with Augmented Reality that will have its own operating system called xrOS. The project has been in the works for a few years, and its release date is set for 2023. Because of this, iOS 17 isn’t getting as much attention as it used to.
Gurman said that this operating system, called Dawn or “dawn”, could have “fewer changes than originally expected” because of the focus on xrOS, which is expected to be similar to what Apple already offers. The project is especially important because it will be the “base” that users will see when they put on the VR/AR headset.
If Apple sticks to its usual schedule, iOS 17 could come out as early as June this year. This is what happened with iOS 16, which came out in September, so there’s still time to see if any new features will be added or if they will be added to future versions or up to iOS 18.
MacRumors says that Apple is working on at least two augmented reality projects that will come out this year. They also say that Apple will launch augmented reality glasses this year. But it’s still not clear when they could be shown or even if they will come in 2023.
