Shakira will set another ground-breaking and hip-shaking record at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.
MTV confirmed on Aug. 28 that the Colombian superstar will be the first South American artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award since the MTV VMAs’ inception in 1984.
Janet Jackson, Madonna, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, David Bowie, and The Beatles have all received the prize in the past.
Shakira, 46, will also sing live at the VMAs for the first time since she sung her song “Hips Don’t Lie” with Wyclef Jean at the 2006 VMAs. This year’s VMAs will air live on MTV on September 12 at 8 p.m. ET.
Since her first VMA win in 2002, the “Whenever, Wherever” singer has won four more. She has received 30 VMA nominations over the years.
Her success has paved the way for Latin singers to achieve international stardom. According to Billboard and Telemundo, she is the best-selling female Latin musician of all time, with more than 95 million records sold worldwide. “She’s a trailblazer for women around the world, and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music,” said Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming, and events at Paramount, and chief content officer of music at Paramount+, in a press statement.
This year, she became the first female artist to debut in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 with a Spanish-language single, “BZRP Music Sessions Vol. 53.” She did it again a month later with the song “TQG.”
According to Billboard, Shakira recently had the top three slots on the Billboard Latin Pop Airplay Chart, which has never been done before by any artist.
Shakira has been at the VMAs three times, beginning with “Objection (Tango)” in 2002.
Her most recent VMA win was for most groundbreaking collaboration for her song “Beautiful Liar” with Beyoncé in 2007.
Shakira’s second significant award this year comes from the VMAs. At the first Latin Women in Music event in May, she was honored by Billboard with the 2023 Woman of the Year award.
