In a forthcoming interview, actress Jada Pinkett Smith has opened up about the current state of her marriage to Will Smith. The couple, who tied the knot in 1997, have actually been living “completely separate lives” since 2016, according to Jada.
Keeping Split Private
While announcing their separation after over 20 years of marriage is a big reveal, Jada explained why she and Will have not yet publicly addressed it. According to her, they were “still trying to figure out between the two of us, how to be in partnership” during this time. The pair also had not yet determined “how do we present that to people?” This ambiguity led them to keep their split very private until now. Scrutiny Over Their Marriage
During the period that Jada confirms she and Will separated, their marriage faced increased public scrutiny. In 2020, singer August Alsina claimed he had a romantic relationship with Jada, which she later confirmed on Red Table Talk, calling it an “entanglement.” Then at this year’s Oscars, Will infamously slapped presenter Chris Rock on stage after a joke about Jada’s hair loss due to alopecia.

In a new People interview, Jada also opened up about her initial reaction to Will slapping Chris at the Oscars. She shares that like many viewers, she initially thought it was a skit between the two comedians. It wasn’t until Will started walking away that she realized it was real. The Reason for the Split
While sitting down with Hoda Kotb, Jada touched on the catalyst for her marriage’s dissolution. She cites exhaustion from trying to uphold a “fantasy” of what they thought the other should be. By 2016, this fantasy was no longer sustainable according to Jada. While the pair is not legally divorced, Jada says she made a promise to never have a reason to divorce Will – a promise she has so far kept.
