Moments after it was announced that David Corenswet would play James Gunn’s Man of Steel in Superman: Legacy, replacing Henry Cavill after ten years in the part, Twitter reminded everyone of Ryan Murphy’s Hollywood Exists, the show where Corenswet has played his biggest role to date.
Anyone who has seen this production knows that it is a very silly and kitsch miniseries. It is one of those utopian pieces that Murphy loves to make when he is not letting Evan Peters out of the basement to kill young boys in Dahmer. what’s going on with Netflix. But in the show, what did Corenswet superman do to get Gunn’s attention?
What is Hollywood, David Corenswet series, about?
In Hollywood, David Corenswet plays Jack Castello, a hero of World War II who is usually seen as handsome and strong. Throughout the series, he is always shown with a golden glow.
Jack wants to be an actor, so he goes to Hollywood after the war. There, he meets the kind owner of a gas station who also works as a prostitute. He convinces Jack to join him in a more profitable and sleazy business: sex. After having sex with Patti LuPone’s character, the man is picked to be the main character in a 1940s movie that ends up being a turning point in the fight against racism and homophobia. So far as I know, there hasn’t been a comic where Superman bets on OnlyFans or where the power of movies is used to help social causes in their political fight. But it’s not surprising that more than one Twitter user joked about this project after Superman: Legacy was announced, even though it’s shocking to remember that this show really does exist and wasn’t just the result of many people’s feverish pandemic fantasies.
The ideal Superman… at least for James Gunn
Gunn told Variety in the middle of the casting process that his dream Superman would be “someone who has all of Superman’s humanity but is also an alien” and “has all of Superman’s kindness and compassion, someone you really want to embrace.”
Corenswet is the main character of Ryan Murphy’s show because he has these traits: he is conventionally handsome, has a smile that would make any director sigh, and has soft, sensitive eyes. Plus, he’s a friendly person, which seems important for an alien with American roots who represents all the good in the world and the things we should try to be.
Even though it might have been more of a Hollywood trick than the result of Corenswet’s acting, there was something strange about him back then. As for his humanity and kindness, he seems like the kind of guy you could take home on a Saturday afternoon and introduce to your mother, winning her over with his charming manners and even more charming arms, before he left to save Metropolis on Sunday. A good substitute for Henry Cavill.
Overall, it’s hard to imagine a better person to play a young, kind Clark Kent on his way to becoming a hero. He’s like the unfinished product in Hollywood whose good nature leads it to a bigger purpose.

Selecting his own adventure
Corenswet grew raised in Philadelphia, and his father worked as an actor in New York. “I didn’t have a dream of being an actor, even though my dad was a theater actor for many years,” he told MTV News. Corenswet, on the other hand, auditioned for his first play in Philadelphia at the age of nine and was cast in a production of “All My Sons.”
“I started putting in all these hours as a young actor in Philadelphia, and then doing musicals at my school,” he told MTV, adding that his “dad was mostly responsible for taking me to all my theater gigs when I was a kid.” In honor of his father and as a good luck charm, he wears a 1980s New York subway token. Corenswet’s grandpa is also credited with coming up with the concept of “Choose Your Own Adventure” books.

Corenswet graduated from New York’s Juilliard School of Acting in 2016. Beginning in 2014, he starred in “Moe & Jerryweather,” an online comedy sketch series he co-created with Adam Langdon.
Corenswet appeared in an episode of MTV’s “One Bad Choice” in 2015, as well as a 2017 episode of “Elementary.” He also appeared in a pilot for a Rob Reiner show that was not picked up for a full season. However, one of his first significant parts was in the 2018 political thriller “Affairs of State,” in which he played a congressional aide. Forbes described him as having a “star-making combination of traditional good looks and a compelling deadpan voice” in the film, comparing him to a young Armie Hammer. Corenswet then appeared on episodes like “Instinct” and “House of Cards.” In the final season of the latter series, he appeared in a flashback as Claire Underwood’s (Robin Wright) undergraduate boyfriend.
Breaking out
Corenswet’s breakthrough role came in 2019 with Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series “The Politician,” in which he played River Barkley, Ben Platt’s character’s opponent and ex-boyfriend. Murphy swiftly recast Corenswet as wannabe actor Jack Castello in his 2020 Netflix series “Hollywood”. Corenswet also created the show, which was set in 1940s Hollywood. “It was the first role I’d ever been offered without an audition, which is awesome,” he told Variety, and Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter that the actor is “that unicorn in this business,” since he “looks like an old-time movie star and he can act, too.” Corenswet also appeared in Jenny Slate’s 2020 film “The Sunlit Night.”
Corenswet had a busy year in 2022, playing detective David McDougall in HBO’s “We Own This City,” the romantic dramedy “Look Both Ways” on Netflix, and the projectionist in the A24 horror picture “Pearl” opposite Mia Goth. In addition to “Superman: Legacy,” he has a sequel to “Twister” starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell in the works, as well as the Apple TV+ series “Lady in the Lake” starring Natalie Portman. Corenswet told V Magazine that he wants to follow in the footsteps of actresses turned directors like Olivia Wilde and Bradley Cooper.
Corenswet sparked online speculation that he would make an excellent Superman, partly because he resembles a younger version of Henry Cavill, the previous Superman. In “The Politician,” Platt’s character even tells Corenswet, “You look like Superman.”
And the actor hasn’t been hesitant in expressing his interest in the part. “My far-fetched ambition is to play Superman,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2019. “I’d love to see someone do an upbeat, throwback [Superman].” I like Henry Cavill’s dark and gritty interpretation, but I’d want to see the next one be really light and optimistic.” This appears to be consistent with Gunn’s concept for the character, since the filmmaker has stated that Superman should be “someone you want to hug.”
Corenswet allegedly beat out Tom Brittney and Nicholas Hoult for the lead part in “Superman: Legacy,” which is crucial to DC’s future.
