Google Rapidly Launches Generative AI Search Worldwide
Google revealed it is swiftly deploying its latest generative AI search capability, Search Generative Experience (SGE), across more than 100 countries and territories while also adding support for four additional languages. This highlights Google’s urgent efforts to launch its AI-powered search globally in order to challenge Microsoft’s Bing search engine and ChatGPT.
SGE is a conversational version of Google search, leveraging generative AI to provide text responses to queries along with relevant images and videos. SGE is separate from Google’s AI chatbot Bard, which is designed for general conversation. SGE is laser-focused on search, while Bard handles open-ended chats. Google Significantly Expands the Availability of Its AI Search Feature
As part of the announcement, Google stated that SGE is debuting in 126 new regions, including major markets like Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, and South Korea. SGE is now offered in a grand total of 129 countries and territories around the world. Users can also now search using Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, and Indonesian.
Moreover, SGE users can ask follow-up questions directly on the results page without needing to re-enter the full search query again. Follow-up questions will display alongside answers, related ads, and previous questions and responses to provide full context. This capability will initially launch in English in the US within the coming weeks.
Google also revealed enhanced translation abilities in SGE. It can now detect homonyms in translations and inquire which word meaning the user wants. For instance, translating “tie” to Spanish will allow users to tap “tie” and pick the intended meaning.

Racing to Lead in an AI-Powered Search
SGE represents Google’s response to Microsoft’s new generative AI Bing search engine. Microsoft gained first-mover advantage by releasing Bing’s AI capabilities earlier this year along with its chatbot. SGE and Bard followed afterwards as Google’s competing offerings.
While generative AI shows promise for improving search, it also introduces challenges. Inaccurate responses can diminish trust, and AI-generated text occupies space traditionally used for ads.
