Sex Education, the Netflix comedy-drama television series, has tragically been canceled before of its season 4 premiere on the streaming service, which means fans will have to say goodbye to their favorite sex-crazed characters shortly. The British show launched in January 2020 and earned immediate acclaim from critics and fans alike. The shows’ broad, bold, and hilarious tone was well received by viewers. A television show of any kind rarely handles problems like sex education in such a realistic way, which is part of why viewers fell in love with it in the first place.
Sex Education was renewed for three more seasons by Netflix throughout the years, with each part fulfilling its season one promise to be as brutally honest, emotionally deep, and outrageously humorous as possible. Of course, the Netflix series hasn’t been flawless, but that only adds to its allure. Unfortunately, the end is approaching, and fans will have only one more journey to look forward to when the fourth season starts on September 21, 2023.
Season 5 of Sex Education Will Not Take Place
In the summer of 2023, Netflix announced that Sex Education season 4 will be the final season of the comedy-drama television show, therefore ending the series before a fifth season could be produced. Of course, the cancellation news was disappointing, given that the show only had eight episodes left to finish the story of Otis, Eric, and Maeve. On the plus side, the writers knew that season 4 would be the final one, so they had plenty of time to plan the perfect sendoff for all of the characters. Only time will tell if the finale is satisfactory to the viewers.
Why Is Sex Education Season 4 Coming to an End?
The decision to cancel Sex Education after season 4 was influenced by a number of factors. For starters, many cast members are going on to larger and better things as their careers progress. In addition, creator Laurie Nunn remarked that the fourth season felt like the series’ inevitable conclusion. Nunn wrote in a message to followers, according to The Hollywood Reporter:
“Writing this feels bittersweet because we’ve decided that the fourth season will also be our show’s final installment.” This was not an easy decision to make, but as the new season’s themes and storylines became obvious, it became clear that this was the proper time to graduate.”
What Will the Cast of Sex Education Do After Season 4?
Following the conclusion of Sex Education season 4, a number of cast members have new television shows and films in the works as they transition away from the Netflix show. Ncuti Gatwa, who plays Eric Effiong, is poised to play the titular character in the BBC series Doctor Who for the fifteenth time, making him the first Black actor to do so. Asa Butterfield, who plays Otis Milburn, is working on a holiday romantic comedy called Your Christmas or Mine 2. Finally, Emma Mackey, who played Maeve Wiley in Sex Education, is in production on Hot Milk, a film based on the book of the same name.
