James Gunn did a great job with Guardians of the Galaxy 3. He made it into a movie with drama, humor, action, and even a bit of horror, where the story of the most misfit group in the universe crossed paths with some new and complicated characters.
The movie takes place soon after what happened in Infinity War and Endgame, where Gamora died. The team doesn’t have much time to mourn or heal, though, because they soon get a new mission and have to work together to save the world again.
This mission brings them into contact with Adam Warlock (played by Will Poulter), an eternal who was made by scientists trying to make the perfect human. They also meet a bad guy named High Evolutionary and a girl named Phyla-Vell, who is a key character for the future of the MCU.
Who is High Evolutionary?
Herbert Edgar Wyndham, who is played in the movie by Chukwudi Iwujy and was made in the 1960s, is known as Guardians of the Galaxy 3 High Evolutionary. He first appeared in 1966 in The Mighty Thor #134.
ThePopverse.com says that this character is a genetics expert who has spent his whole life obsessed with evolution and the search for perfection. Because of this, he decided to do an experiment to speed up evolution and make more perfect beings, which he does with the help of an alien named Phaeder. Of course, this didn’t go over well with other scientists, and Herbert was kicked out of the University of Oxford as a result.
Outside of college, Herbert started to play around with magic and try many things on himself. This is how he got powers like being able to heal himself and control matter. His story is related to Rocket’s because High Evolutionary is trying to make a race of smart, human-like animals that he can use as slaves and fighters when necessary.
Also, this figure has something to do with the story of Pietro and Wanda Maximoff. He is the one who does experiments on them and changes their genes to make them into mutants.
Who is Phyla-Vell in Guardians of the Galaxy 3?
As you might guess, the “Vell” part of the name refers to Mar-Vell, the original version of Captain Marvel. This character’s children are Phyla and her brother De Ella Genis-Vell.
In the movie, Phyla is a girl with white hair who gets stuck on High Evolutionary ship. The Guardians of the Galaxy save her, and she joins the new team in one of the after-credits scenes.
The character first showed up in the Captain Marvel comics from 2004. There, it was revealed that she and her brother were born with special powers from Mar-Vell’s DNA and a little bit of genetic engineering, like being able to fly, have super strength, and control energy. Genis becomes the new Captain Marvel, but Phyla takes her place soon after and finally joins the Guardians of the Galaxy.
In the movie, Phyla is one of The High Evolutionary’s experiments, but there may be a way to link her new story to what happened in the comics.
