The iPhone 16 won’t be out until September 2024, but rumors on the Chinese website Weibo since July 17, 2023, say that the iPhone 16 Max’s camera module will have a super-telephoto camera.

What can we expect from the iPhone 16 camera?

Most of the time, “super-telephoto” or “ultra-telephoto” refers to a camera with a focal length of more than 300mm, which greatly magnifies and brings distant objects into focus. The telephoto camera on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro already has a focal length equal to 77mm, so a possible focal length of 300mm or more on the iPhone 16 Pro Max would be a big improvement, even with the new iPhone 15.

In fact, sports and wildlife photos are where super telephoto cameras are most often used. But because they make very soft backgrounds, they are also good for portrait shooting as long as the subject is far enough away from the photographer.

According to the Apple report, the upgrade to a periscope telephoto camera system that will come with the iPhone 15 Pro Max in 2023 could make the change easier. Apple plans to put the wide camera on both of the iPhone 16 Pro models coming out next year. This would be possible, it seems, because the smaller model will be bigger. What’s the upside? Apple could keep the two Pro devices different from each other next year by giving the iPhone 16 Pro Max a super-telephoto lens.

The information comes from the ‘Digital Chat Station’ Weibo account, which has been reliable in the past when it comes to revealing Apple’s plans. But the leak from Apple doesn’t say for sure which iPhone 16 series model it is. But based on what has been said so far, it seems likely that the leaker is talking about the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This year, the same person shared similar information about the camera, claiming to have gotten it from someone in the business.

The Weibo user also said again what he said in the Apple leak: that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 1/1.14-inch camera sensor that is 12% bigger than the one in the iPhone 16 Pro. For comparison, the 1/1.28-inch sensor is in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. But the iPhone 15 Pro Max from this year is not likely to have a bigger camera.

The iPhone’s main camera could have a better dynamic range and background blur if it had a bigger sensor. It could also help a lot with taking pictures in low light, since a larger area can catch more light with the same shutter speed and aperture.

iPhone 16 new zoom levels

This is according to a new Weibo post by Digital Chat Station, a prolific leaker who has become a prominent source of information regarding impending gadgets such as iPhones and Android phones. The document, which was discovered by MacRumors, claims that the iPhone 14 Pro’s telephoto lens with a 77mm focal length would expand to a focal length greater than 300mm on the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

This would transform the camera into a “super” or “ultra” telephoto camera, providing for significantly greater zoom capacity. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has a maximum zoom of 3x, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max is likely to improve on that with a new telescopic camera. Now it appears that we might expect an even bigger update the next time.

According to the same Weibo article, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will also get a bigger camera sensor measuring 1/1.14 inches in size. That would be significantly larger than the current 1/1.28-inch sensor used in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max lines, with no size increase predicted in this year’s new iPhones.

In September, Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro lineups, possibly alongside new Apple Watches.
