Namor, the villain in the movie Wakanda Forever who was born at the bottom of the sea to a human marine captain and a princess of an underwater kingdom, is one of the characters in the Marvel universe who has gotten the most attention so far.
This mutant hero has superhuman strength, can breathe underwater, and has other abilities like the ability to fly. He has been a part of Marvel stories for a long time, including The Avengers, The Fantastic Four, The Invaders, The Defenders, and the X-Men. But it wasn’t until Wakanda Forever that it became one of the audience’s favorites, especially because of how well the Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta played the role. This gave the Latino community visibility and representation in the film industry.
But Namor’s change in the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t quite as simple as it seems. And the reason is that, even though Tenoch Huerta won our hearts and the hearts of the rest of the world with his portrayal of this anti-hero, we probably won’t see him on screen again, at least not in a production for this character.
Namor from Wakanda Forever won’t get his own movie because Disney and Marvel didn’t own the intellectual property of these characters when they first started making movies based on Marvel comic book characters. And the reason is that Marvel used to sell the rights to some characters to other studios before it made Iron Man as its own movie. For the same reason, Fox bought the rights to the X-Men and Sony bought Spider-Man. In the same way, Namor was bought by another studio, Universal Studios. This means that Namor can still be a character in Disney stories, but he won’t be able to get his own movie for a while.
You may be familiar with this situation because the Hulk, one of the strongest Avengers, is also owned by Universal Studios and can’t be in any Marvel movies because of this. In this case, the producer of Wakanda Forever, Nate Moore, said, “[By using Namor’s character], there isn’t much we can’t do with the character’s point of view, which is good because it means we can get ideas from the source material but also make changes that really connect it to a world that wasn’t reached in the books.”
In fact, Moore says that director and co-writer Ryan Coogler’s work on Wakanda Forever is notable for the way he reworked Namor’s original sources without getting in trouble with the law. He says, “I’ve read all the Namor comics and I love them, but the world of Atlantis hasn’t been talked about much. So, Ryan, who is a very detail-oriented director, wanted to tie it to something that made Wakanda feel as real and tangible to the audience as possible. Also, I don’t see anything from a business perspective that would have stopped us from doing it this way, which is great.
