Craig Mazin says, “The biggest problem was that so much of the game is about getting into the world.” “And about giving the player the chance to keep playing. We don’t do that when we watch TV, so we thought about what parts of the story could be turned into drama and what parts of the game experience weren’t necessary or could be changed into something else to make it easier to watch. watch. I think some adaptations of games have failed because they try to copy the game. We didn’t do that. Instead, we took Neil’s story and characters as a starting point and expanded on them, showing more and giving people a bigger picture. to look at things and not play.
Druckmann says, “For me, it was the weather.” “The first conversations were about the philosophy behind this adaptation, the things that had to be confirmed, the story’s themes and messages, who these characters are, and what their relationships are. how do we go beyond that and move from one medium to another? On the Experience of being part of the Series and What they Learned from the Characters
Pedro Pascal says, “It’s been interesting for everyone. It’s not like anything we’ve ever had to work with before, but it’s very helpful, and I feel like in a way, we were all working together. Neil’s game is great, and I’ve never had a chance to do something like this before. I think Craig was worried that we would see or play the game a lot and want to copy him too much. I think Bella and I secretly studied it and kept it from him, but it also helped us put together different pieces of the puzzle that we could use in the script, the sets, and the cast. We were all in this together, so we could use it this way.”
Ramsey, who plays Ellie, says, “None of us were gamers, but we studied it. I think that was important because they gave us the chapters as we went along. They didn’t give us all of them because Craig was writing as they were filming, so seeing the game was important to learn more about the story. It was great to have that material. We filmed for a year, and I’m proud of what we did.
Merle Dandridge, who plays Marlene in both the TV show and the video game, says that doing this “with a different medium was a big challenge. I had to forget what I knew about Marlene, because I had been living for her for 10 years, and my experience was very different. I was able to put myself in her place and figure out how to make her physical, but we had a great team and were able to show off some of the most beautiful things in the game. They took me out of the normal way I lived as this character, and it was a great gift to be able to explore it in a different setting.”
Gabriel Luna, who plays Tommy Miller, said that he is a gamer and that he started playing the game in 2013. In the series, I was completely immersed in this world, and it’s a 360-degree experience. They built sets and textures from the game, and it’s exciting.”
On Being Part of the Gaming World
Bella Ramsey “I think we all understood that when you have such an immersive experience, like a game, and spend so much time with these characters, being them or interacting with them, you get attached to them and fans become protective because they know who they are. I understand the worries, but I think we did a great job and I’m not worried. If people hate it, then they hate it.
Mazin said, “When I played The Last of Us, I didn’t care about Joel or Ellie because I didn’t know them. But when I met Joel, he was just a guy sitting on a couch, and it was his birthday and he was tired. When I met Ellie, she was a girl in her room, and she was kind of upset, but over the course of the trip, I fell in love with them.” Everyone has had that through the game, and it has an emotional connection and a relationship. We are asking people to start over with a new medium. It’s okay that they don’t feel connected yet, but they will, and I think they’ll have more feelings.”
“I understand because I watch a lot of movies and TV, but this takes it to a new level because it puts you in the world of the character. I don’t know if we made it, but Neil and Craig do because they love it as much or more than the gamers. “You have the one who made this world, and both of them are doing it with all their hearts and minds, so we are in good hands,” says Pedro Pascal.
Druckmann gives an example of how realistic the series is by saying that, while he was in Joel’s room on the set of The Last of Us, he had to take a zoom meeting “People on the other end of the line could tell, and they started to say, “Look at the sheets, look at the poster, look at the details, they did it.” It was weird to hear that, and I also think these actors did a great job.
